Irish, US bishops' agencies unite for immigration reform

Catholic World News

Washington, DC - Officials of the Irish Episcopal Commission for Emigrants (IECE) met with lobbyists in
Washington on March 7 to plan a campaign for reform of US immigration laws, for the benefit of undocumented
Irish immigrants working in America.

IECE, a service established by the Irish Catholic bishops to benefit emigrants. IECE officials met with
representatives of the Catholic Legal Immigration Network, an agency set up by the US bishops’ conference to
“enhance and expand delivery of legal services to indigent and low-income immigrants.”

Speaking on behalf of the campaign, Father Alan Hilliard reported that the IECE has helped to arrange lobbying
visits with 110 members of the US Congress in the past year, sometimes coordinating the visits with other
immigration-reform groups. “We will keep up the pressure,” he vowed.
