How CLINIC Helps
• The BIA Project regularly screens cases of detained asylum-seekers and lawful
permanent residents and matches them with pro bono attorneys.
• CLINIC recruits, trains and coordinates the schedules of experienced immigration
practitioners or “screening attorneys,” who on a weekly basis review cases of asylum-
seekers, long time lawful permanent residents, and minors in need of representation.
• Screening attorneys create redacted summaries of meritorious cases which are then
circulated via email to more than 350 attorneys, accredited representatives, and
supervised law students.
• CLINIC facilitates initial contact with the detainee, helps project participants enter
their appearance before the BIA, and obtains the complete record and a new briefing
schedule from the BIA.
• CLINIC and its NGO partners in the BIA Project (the American Immigration Law
Foundation, the National Immigration Project of the National Lawyer’s Guild, and the
Capital Area Immigrants’ Rights Coalition) provide training, technical assistance, and
mentoring to the Project’s pro bono attorneys.
When project clients are subject to poor detention conditions or release practices,
CLINIC engages in advocacy with the Executive Office for Immigration Review and the
Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

CLINIC was founded in 1988 as an independently constituted, tax-exempt organization
that serves low-income immigrants without reference to religion, race, nationality, or
ethnicity. We are the only immigrant legal services organization of national scope.
CLINIC and its nationwide community-based programs provide legal services to tens of
thousands of qualified individuals each year. CLINIC's work safeguards human rights,
promotes justice for its clients, and affirms democratic principles.
