ALMA Expands Offering of Legal Services in Charlotte, NC

Charlotte, North CarolinaDuring the 1980s and 1990s, Charlotte, N.C. experienced a rapid growth in its population.

Immigrants began moving into the southern city in search of jobs as a result of the boost in construction, manufacturing, and agricultural industries.
One organization recognized the needs of this new population and responded. Catholic Social Services had historically provided resettlement services to refugees in Charlotte and the surrounding areas. The program decided to expand and also provide legal immigration services, creating the Asheville Legal Migration Assistance (ALMA) program.
CLINIC provided a start-up award that allowed ALMA to expand its scope of services beyond
refugees.
