CLINIC Urges Special Protections for Haitian Children & Families

Washington, DC – The Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC) has joined four national and international social service organizations in urging special protections for Haitian children and families affected by the January 12 earthquake in that country.

WASHINGTON (USCCB)—In a letter to three Cabinet secretaries February 4, the heads of five major Catholic agencies serving Haitian earthquake victims outlined steps that should be taken to ensure the protection of unaccompanied Haitian childrenin the aftermath of the January 12th earthquake. 

Cardinal George Sends Letter to President Obama Requesting TPS for Haitians

In a January 15 letter to President Barack Obama, Cardinal Francis George, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) urges the designation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians living in the U.S.

USCCB Launches 2010 National Migration Week

Renewing Hope, Seeking Justice is the theme of the 2010 National Migration Week, held January 3 - 9. The observance began over 25 years ago by the bishops to be a moment for Catholics to take stock of the wide diversity of the Church and the ministries serving them.

Following the lead of Pope Benedict, who is focusing on “Minor Migrants and Refugees” for the 2010 World Day of Migrants and Refugees, this year's National Migration Week focuses on migrant children as a sub-theme for this year.

CLINIC Applauds Framework Provided by Comprehensive Immigration Reform Bill

On Wednesday, December 16, Representative Solomon P. Ortiz (D-TX) introduced HR 4321, the Comprehensive Immigration Reform for America’s Security and Prosperity (CIR ASAP) Act of 2009.  This bill, drafted by Representative Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) and co-sponsored by 89 others, has revived the immigration debate in Congress. 


CLINIC applauds the efforts of Representative Gutierrez and his colleagues who represent a broad spectrum of constituencies. 

CLINIC to Match Unaccompanied Minors with Free Legal Services

The Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC) has been awarded a contract to match unaccompanied immigrant children who have recently been released from government custody with pro bono attorneys. CLINIC’s National Pro Bono Project for Children will train and support pro bono attorneys across the country to assist unaccompanied children in need of legal representation.

CLINIC Welcomes DHS Initiatives for Detention Reform

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has released a report on proposed reforms to the detention system that recommends expanded use of alternatives to detention, new models for detention, and improved oversight of medical care and confinement of detainees.

The Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC) views the recommendations as a welcome first step in addressing our broken immigration system, and moving away from the flawed penal system model that has been adopted for immigrant detention.
