Immigration Attorney - La Casa Project

Summary

Indiana Legal Services, Inc. (ILS) is a statewide, not-for-profit organization that provides free legal services to eligible clients in civil cases through 8 branch offices. ILS is funded by the Legal Services Corporation, Indiana Civil Legal Aid Fund, United Ways, Area Agencies on Aging, and approximately 60 other funding sources.

This is a full-time position. The LCAP Attorney will provide substantive legal advice and representation to low-income immigrants in humanitarian and family-based immigration petitions. The LCAP Attorney will also be expected to cultivate and develop relationships with the staff of the partner organization, La Casa. This attorney will work under the direct supervision of the South Bend Regional Office Managing Attorney and the ILRC Project Director. The position will require some travel.

Responsibilities

  • Complete and review applications for immigration benefits and applications for relief from removal.
  • Provide direct legal services to immigrant children and families, prioritizing serving survivors of harm rising to the level of persecution and torture, and child abuse and neglect.
  • Represent immigrants seeking asylum in removal proceedings.
  • Represent non-U.S. citizens filing applications for immigration benefits, including affirmative asylum, naturalization, U nonimmigrant status/visa petitions, family-based petitions and provisional waivers, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status cases, petitions under the Violence Against Women Act, and Temporary Protected Status applications.
  • Supervise assigned law students and volunteers.
  • Cultivate relationships with partner organizations, including through the provision of training.
  • Plan, implement, and staff regular outreach sessions with partner organizations.
  • Develop and maintain networking relationships with local bar associations and with local, state, and federal governments and community agencies that serve our client population.
  • Exhibit a high level of personal energy, organization, and commitment to the position and the ILS mission.

Qualifications

  • J.D. degree after graduation from an ABA-accredited law school and admitted to practice law in Indiana.
  • Proficiency in Spanish is required.
  • 2-3 years of immigration practice experience is strongly preferred.
  • A demonstrated commitment to social and economic justice and serving disadvantaged and immigrant communities.
  • Strong writing, communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • An ability to provide victim-centered, trauma-informed, and culturally competent legal assistance to crime victims/survivors.
  • An ability to work collaboratively in a variety of contexts and with multiple organizations to facilitate comprehensive services to immigrant and LEP communities.
  • Prior legal experience working in humanitarian immigration and victim services.
  • Prior removal defense experience is preferred.
  • Law school clinic, externship, summer, or other relevant practice experience.
  • Ability to comply with ILS policies and procedures and competently perform all job duties, with reasonable accommodations.
  • A valid, Indiana driver’s license and reliable transportation is required.

Salary and Benefits

  • Starting salary is $57,425, with a range up to a maximum of $75,535, depending on experience. The salary range in this posting does not include additional compensation for candidates who meet ILS's Spanish language certification requirement. The additional compensation is pending review, and the salary range may be updated upon completion of the review.
