Staff Attorney
Summary
NewBridges is seeking a bilingual staff immigration attorney to lead the Immigration Legal Program. As the staff attorney, you will provide direct service to clients with a variety of immigration needs, such as: VAWA for survivors of domestic violence, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS), U and T visas, Temporary Protected Status (TPS), Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), permanent residence, and/or naturalization. The staff attorney will also provide supervision to accredited representatives/paralegals who will support case work.

Since 2000, NewBridges has been a vital resource in the Shenandoah Valley, providing direct services and connections to resources. NewBridges represents approximately 200 immigration cases per year in order to provide reliable, low-cost support to immigrants from all over the world. The organization is currently in the midst of a growth process as we look to expand our representation through a staff attorney.
Responsibilities
Direct Representation (60%)
- The successful candidate will provide representation to immigrants, refugees, and asylees
- Responsibilities will include preparing and submitting immigration applications to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)
- Responding to requests for evidence; keeping clients informed about their case status
- Ensuring that clients receive and understand communications from USCIS regarding their pending applications
- Preparing clients for interviews with USCIS
- Representing clients before the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR)
- Educating clients about their rights and obligations under immigration law
Management, Supervision and Training (40%)
- Oversee the NewBridges Immigration Law Program, providing direction and guidance on overall strategy and practice within the organization
- Supervise accredited representatives on staff and ensure case work is completed in a timely and accurate manner
- Identify and contribute to grant funding opportunities
- Facilitate additional learning opportunities for accredited representatives and paralegals
- Work with volunteers and interns to ensure records are well maintained
- Provide reports to the Executive Director on cases and outcomes
Essential Qualifications
- Juris Doctor and active bar license
- Fluency in reading, writing and speaking in English and Spanish
- 1-2 Years of Immigration Law Experience is preferred
- Demonstrated cultural competence and cross-cultural communication skills are required
- Public interest, specifically community-based, nonprofit legal experience and/or demonstrated commitment to the public interest required
- Excellent computer skills and office administration skills including Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, and Excel
- Prior supervisory experience, preferably in a legal setting
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Strong analytical, legal research, and writing skills
- Previous experience working with immigrant communities (including lived experience)
- Desire and ability to work independently, but also able to perform in a team environment
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow rules of ethical practice
- Ability to stay organized, manage a high volume workload, and work under strict deadlines
- Sensitivity to the needs and legal issues affecting people of diverse backgrounds
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice and sensitivity to challenges of the immigrant community
- All candidates must pass a criminal background/sex offender check prior to employment
Salary and Benefits
- This position is a full–time, exempt position, working 36 hours per week.
- Hybrid work will be permitted.
- Salary Range: $55,000 - $68,000 per year, commensurate with experience
- Benefits include: health insurance, retirement, paid-time off.
