Supervising Senior Attorney - Mentorship Project

Summary

The Supervising Senior Attorney has the primary responsibility of managing CLINIC’s Mentorship Project designed to increase the capacity of its network of charitable immigration legal services organizations (“CLINIC affiliates”) to provide representation in complex immigration cases. Additionally, this attorney will conduct trainings (both in-person and virtually), provide technical support, and write/update articles and other legal resource materials. The attorney in this position must analyze and apply immigration law principles to complex questions and fact scenarios. The Supervising Senior Attorney will also provide direct supervision to the Senior Paralegal and, potentially, other attorneys on the Training and Technical Assistance (TTA) team.

Primary Responsibilities

Project Design

  • Determine the parameters of CLINIC’s Mentorship Project including, but not limited to, types and number of cases the project will accept, affiliate eligibility or priority criteria, and resources to be created, in coordination with the Director of TTA.
  • Create and update (as needed) standard operating procedures for the Mentorship Project.
  • Partner with CLINIC’s Field Engagement team to develop, implement and oversee evaluative processes to determine the current needs and capacity of CLINIC’s network.

Project Management

  • Review case referrals and determine what cases to accept for mentorship, considering viable legal issues, potential conflicts, and affiliate and CLINIC resources.
  • Assist with administrative aspects of project management such as maintaining accurate records in CLINIC’s case management system, current statistics, and data.
  • Partner with CLINIC’s Field Engagement team to develop, implement, and oversee evaluative processes to assess the quality and impact of the project as well as to determine areas for continued excellence or improvement.
  • Assist in the creation, maintenance, and updating of a sample and template library for project use.
  • Provide the Director of TTA with information needed for funding applications and reports, for Board of Directors and management consumption, as requested, and for budgeting purposes.

Technical Assistance and Training

  • Maintain a broad knowledge and understanding of U.S. immigration law and be informed about changes in immigration regulations and policies.
  • Provide accurate and comprehensive legal advice to CLINIC affiliates and review of written materials as needed.
  • Mentor affiliates on complex cases including but not limited to asylum, removal defense, and waivers. Provide moot sessions, samples or template materials as needed.
  • Partner with CLINIC’s Field Engagement team to determine topics for trainings and resources based on project inquiries and feedback.
  • Conduct in-person and remote trainings and webinars.
  • As assigned, accept opportunities to speak at conferences on immigration law issues.
  • As assigned, write articles, and assist in updating CLINIC’s legal reference materials.
  • Assist CLINIC’s Advocacy section on select issues including analyzing and drafting comments to proposed regulations, changes in policy guidance and revisions to immigration forms.
  • Exercise independent legal judgment.

Supervision

  • Provide leadership, direction, supervision, consultation, mentoring and support to Senior Paralegal to ensure clarity in role, responsibilities, and expectations. May also provide direct supervision to other attorneys on the TTA team.
  • Assign cases and case-specific assignments to staff and monitor and review work on a regular basis.
  • Ensure quality control mechanisms and monitor staff’s effective use of CLINIC’s resources and case management system.
  • Conduct assessments of staff performance and provide regular guidance and feedback to staff and the TTA Director.
  • Complete performance evaluations.
  • Assess staff resources and developmental needs, make recommendations on strategies for meeting those needs, and facilitate access to developmental resources.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Licensed to practice law in a United States jurisdiction and eligible for admission to federal courts.
  • Eight years or more experience in immigration law.
  • At least three years supervisory experience
  • High degree of knowledge, experience and skill in the area of immigration law, with preference given to applicants with experience in asylum, relief from removal and/or immigration consequences of criminal conduct
  • Commitment to excellence and high standards

  • Proven ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Management experience or proven ability to manage a program and legal assistants, including budgetary aspects

  • 100% Remote, anywhere within the continental United States

Salary Range

  • $88,000 - $95,000
