Training and Technical Assistance Intern
USCIS Office of Administrative Appeals (AAO) has a database of non-precedent cases, and CLINIC has created a catalog of AAO decisions relating to U nonimmigrant status for victims of crime. The intern would work to update this catalog of U status AAO decisions. The intern may also be asked to conduct research to assist with CLINIC newsletter articles, trainings and manuals as needed. Assist with preparing cases for pro bono direct representation as needed.
Primary Responsibilities
- Research USCIS U status decisions in the AAO database and update the existing catalog accordingly.
- Conduct other research as needed by the Training and Technical Assistance team for newsletter articles, trainings, manuals and other publications.
- Assist with pro bono direct representation cases by conducting legal screenings to determine eligibility for immigration benefits, research legal issues and country conditions, gather documentation and assist with case preparation. Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Pursuing a J.D. degree.
- Experience working with immigrants, marginalized communities or communities of color.
- Work experience or law school course in immigration law or immigration law experience is helpful, but not required;
- Experience in a nonprofit or law firm practicing public interest, litigation, immigration, criminal, or child custody law is helpful, but not required;
- Strong legal research, and legal writing skills;
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work independently;
- Have proven organizational skills and a strong attention to detail.
- Bring excellent interpersonal, relationship-building, and teamwork skills, while also being able to work well independently.
- Have strong written and oral communication skills.
- Be familiar with online prospect research resources such as Westlaw and Lexis.
- Have a commitment to professional ethics in working with confidential information.
- Be proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).

Salary
Unpaid. Will help sponsor students for third-party scholarship opportunities and/or academic credit.
