Please join us for a three-part webinar series on representing refugees and asylees. We will discuss family reunification options and how the Trump administration’s policies impact these options. Next, we will explore the eligibility requirements for adjustment of status and discuss the application requirements. Finally, the series will cover naturalization, termination of status, and travel as they pertain to refugees and asylees.

Webinar One: Family Reunification for Asylees and Refugees

Nov. 6 | 2-3:30 p.m. ET | CA MCLE 1.5

In week one, we will focus on family reunification for refugees and asylees. We will discuss the processing of I-730s for family members who are both inside and outside the United States. The webinar will cover issues that arise before U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and consulates abroad, how to respond to common Requests for Evidence, as well as how the Trump administration’s travel ban and end to refugee processing impact family members outside of the United States.  

 


Webinar Two: Adjustment of Status for Refugees and Asylees

Nov. 13 | 2-3:30 p.m. ET | CA MCLE 1.5

Special rules govern the adjustment of status to permanent residence for refugees and asylees. This webinar will focus on the eligibility requirements, procedures, and trends in adjustment of status for both principals and derivatives, including a look at special exemptions and waivers of inadmissibility grounds. We will also cover the nunc pro tunc asylum process for applicants who lose derivative status before adjustment. Finally, the presenters will provide tips on adjustment application completion, filing practice, and interview preparation.

 


Webinar Three: Travel Issues, Termination, and Naturalization for Refugees and Asylees

Nov. 20 | 2-3:30 p.m. ET | CA MCLE 1.5

In this webinar presenters will discuss issues that are unique to refugees and asylees in the naturalization process. The session will also cover when and how asylum and refugee termination issues arise and strategies to represent your client when USCIS attempts to terminate status. Finally, we will discuss how your client can travel, whether it is advisable for your client to travel, and potential risks and consequences of traveling while in asylee or refugee status.

Webinar One: Introduction to Asylum Law

In this webinar, we will cover the fundamentals of asylum law. We will walk you through the concepts of past persecution and well-founded fear, the five protected grounds, and establishing a nexus to these grounds. We will use hypothetical scenarios to explain eligibility for asylum under the law.

 


Webinar Two: Credibility and Corroboration

For an asylum claim to be successful, an adjudicator must find an applicant credible. This webinar will explore the legal standards used to evaluate credibility and outline which factors an adjudicator can and cannot consider when making a credibility determination. We will share practical tips on how practitioners can prepare their clients to provide effective testimony to minimize the risk of an adverse credibility finding.  Additionally, we will examine the legal standards concerning corroboration of an asylum claim, including what types of evidence can support a claim and strategies for advocating for asylum eligibility even in the absence of corroborating evidence.

 


Webinar Three: Understanding and Navigating the Bars to Asylum

Nov. 3 | 2-3:30 p.m. ET | CA MCLE 1.5

The mandatory bars to asylum found in the statute can prevent an applicant from demonstrating eligibility for asylum. We will cover key bars to asylum including the persecutor bar, the terrorism-related bars, firm resettlement, and more. We will also discuss the one-year filing deadline, which requires an asylum seeker to file for asylum within one year of their last entry into the United States, unless they qualify for an exception. In addition, we will also review recent regulations and policies that impose significant restrictions on access to asylum.

 


Webinar Four: Asylum Procedures and Hot Topics

Nov. 10 | 2-3:30 p.m. ET | CA MCLE 1.5

In this webinar, we will provide a broad overview of affirmative and defensive asylum procedures. We will highlight the differences between these processes as well as different scenarios to illustrate when and how these procedures apply. Our discussion will cover the basics of completing the I-589 and preparing supporting documentation. In addition, we will review recent changes to laws and policies concerning asylum procedure and how these may impact applicants at various stages. This session will also address various hot topics including asylum fees, pretermission of asylum claims, the expansion of expedited removal, and more.

This webinar will guide practitioners through the process of working effectively with experts, from preparing them to testify and qualifying them in court to responding to common objections regarding their credentials and testimony. Participants will hear from two country conditions experts who will share insights on effective collaboration with attorneys and Fully Accredited Representatives, as well as the challenges they encounter in immigration court.
