CLINIC Alarmed by Ruling Allowing Rapid Termination of TPS for Hondurans, Nicaraguans, and Nepalis
SILVER SPRING, Maryland – The Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC), was dismayed to hear of the Aug. 20, 2025, federal appeals court ruling that clears the way for the Trump administration to immediately terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Hondurans, Nicaraguans, and Nepalis. The Ninth Circuit's Aug. 20 ruling effectively paused the district court's prior injunction that had temporarily blocked the termination of TPS for Nepali, Honduran, and Nicaraguan nationals.
"Our hearts are heavy as we think of the clients across our network who now face losing their work permits and protection from deportation in the coming days and weeks, while they still fear returning to their home countries," said Anna Gallagher, CLINIC's executive director. "More than 63,000 immigrants from those three countries stand to lose their status rapidly and be uprooted from families, jobs, and communities. Some have been in the United States for as long as 26 years. Knowing the dignity and importance of each family, each frightened individual affected by this ruling, we pray for a just resolution that protects life and furthers the common good."
"We are deeply concerned by the court's unexplained ruling that allows TPS terminations to proceed, sidestepping legal questions about discriminatory intent and due process, and disregarding TPS's purpose of protecting vulnerable families from harm. Unfortunately, due to this ruling, Nepali TPS holders will lose their legal status and work rights immediately, and Honduran and Nicaraguan TPS holders will face similar losses on Sept. 8 unless there is further court intervention," said Kristin de la Vega, CLINIC's litigation attorney. "The consequences of the court's decision are devastating for families who have lived, worked, and raised children in the United States for over a decade. Although we are disheartened by this decision, we hope and pray that the courts will ultimately consider the full legal and constitutional issues at stake."
