Webinar One: Introduction to Asylum Law

Oct. 20 | 2-3:30 p.m. ET | CA MCLE 1.5

In this webinar, we will cover the fundamentals of asylum law. We will walk you through the concepts of past persecution and well-founded fear, the five protected grounds, and establishing a nexus to these grounds. We will use hypothetical scenarios to explain eligibility for asylum under the law.

Webinar Two: Credibility and Corroboration

Oct. 27 | 2-3:30 p.m. ET | CA MCLE 1.5

For an asylum claim to be successful, an adjudicator must find an applicant credible. This webinar will explore the legal standards used to evaluate credibility and outline which factors an adjudicator can and cannot consider when making a credibility determination. We will share practical tips on how practitioners can prepare their clients to provide effective testimony to minimize the risk of an adverse credibility finding.  Additionally, we will examine the legal standards concerning corroboration of an asylum claim, including what types of evidence can support a claim and strategies for advocating for asylum eligibility even in the absence of corroborating evidence.

Webinar Three: Understanding and Navigating the Bars to Asylum

Nov. 3 | 2-3:30 p.m. ET | CA MCLE 1.5

The mandatory bars to asylum found in the statute can prevent an applicant from demonstrating eligibility for asylum. We will cover key bars to asylum including the persecutor bar, the terrorism-related bars, firm resettlement, and more. We will also discuss the one-year filing deadline, which requires an asylum seeker to file for asylum within one year of their last entry into the United States, unless they qualify for an exception. In addition, we will also review recent regulations and policies that impose significant restrictions on access to asylum.

Webinar Four: Asylum Procedures and Hot Topics

Nov. 10 | 2-3:30 p.m. ET | CA MCLE 1.5

We will highlight the differences between these processes as well as different scenarios to illustrate when and how these procedures apply. Our discussion will cover the basics of completing the I-589 and preparing supporting documentation. In addition, we will review recent changes to laws and policies concerning asylum procedure and how these may impact applicants at various stages. This session will also address various hot topics including asylum fees, pretermission of asylum claims, the expansion of expedited removal, and more.
