Overview of Citizenship: Acquisition, Derivation, and Naturalization

This four-part webinar series covers automatic citizenship through acquisition and derivation, and the requirements for naturalization. The series will review the naturalization requirements including continuous residence, physical presence, good moral character, the civics and English-language requirements and exemptions, and the oath requirements. The application process will also be covered, including pointers for preparing and submitting the new Form N-400, Application for Naturalization; the N-648, Medical Certification for Disability Exception; and preparing clients for the naturalization interview.

Webinar One: Acquisition and Derivation of Citizenship

June 4 | 2-3:30 p.m. ET | CA MCLE 1.5

In webinar one, presenters will discuss the requirements for acquiring U.S. citizenship at birth abroad and deriving U.S. citizenship from a U.S. citizen parent or parents after birth. Issues covered will include the residence requirements of U.S. citizen parents, the rules for children born in and out of wedlock, and establishing legal and physical custody for derivation. The session will also cover the process for obtaining evidence of U.S. citizenship by applying for a certificate of citizenship or a U.S. passport.

 


Webinar Two: Naturalization: The Residence,  Physical Presence, and English/Civics Requirements

June 11 | 2-3:30 p.m. ET | CA MCLE 1.5

In webinar two, we will cover the residence and physical presence requirements for naturalization. We will also discuss maintenance of lawful permanent residence status and the issue of abandonment. Finally, presenters will review the civics and English language requirements and exemptions as well as eligibility for a waiver of the requirements based on a physical or developmental disability or mental impairment.  

 


Webinar Three: Naturalization: Establishing Good Moral Character

June 18 | 2-3:30 p.m. ET | CA MCLE 1.5

In webinar three, we will continue to examine the eligibility requirements for naturalization with a focus on good moral character. Presenters will also cover select deportation grounds and the risks involved with applying for naturalization. 

 


Webinar Four: The Naturalization Application Process

June 25 | 2-3:30 p.m. ET | CA MCLE 1.5

In webinar four, we will cover the naturalization application process, including screening applicants, completing and submitting the new Form N-400, and preparing clients for the naturalization interview. Presenters will also discuss the oath of allegiance and the waiver available for disabled applicants unable to understand or communicate an understanding of the oath.
